Northwest Indiana Photographer | How to take a great picture of your children by the Christmas tree

Yesterday, I did a little mini session with my boys by our own Christmas tree. It was 7:30 at night, everyone was tired…but they had on matching pajamas. I knew that they weren’t in the mood to “smile for the camera” but I wanted to do something fun with them. Last year, I took some great photos of Finn *my oldest* by the tree, so I wanted to recreate it this year with both boys.

Christmas tree photos

And here’s what we got! I love the way that it turned out, especially after I edited it!

A few people have asked me to tell them on I did it, so I thought I’d write out a little tutorial for people who are looking to take this type of silhouette photograph of their own children!

So here’s my handy-dandy guide for “How to take a great picture of your children by the Christmas tree”

1. First, you NEED an SLR camera (single lens reflex)–this means that you need to be able to set the shutter speed, aperture and ISO for your image.

2. This will work best at night–you need to turn off ALL the lights in your house (including the television if it’s in that room).

3. Set up your camera on a tripod (or a sturdy surface) so that your image is in focus, and not shaky looking.

4. Set your ISO to somewhere between 100 and 200. Since it’s so dark, you don’t want a lot of grain in your image, so you want to go with a LOW shutter speed.

5. Set your shutter speed to around 1/15 of a second. This will make your lights have that pretty glowing look.

6. Set your aperture as OPEN as it will go. Optimally you want it to be at around a 1.4 or 1.8.

7. TAKE SOME PHOTOS and see what you get.

Here’s another example of what I got!

Sweet Finn kissing his baby brother on the head. This image was shot at 1.8 aperture, 1/15 shutter speed, ISO 160. The only light in the room was the tree itself.

Northwest Indiana Christmas Tree Farm Family Photography Session | Akan Family

Okay, so I am slightly biased, but I think this family is absolutely adorable. They have two boys, and I have two boys. They have a cute dog, and I have a cute dog. They might have better outfits than my family does, but still! The boys–Adam and Michael–were just about the cutest boys I’ve ever seen. Super-duper sweet to each other, and just so cute. I kind of wanted to hire them to make sure that my boys will act just like their boys when they are older. Anna, let me know if that’s still okay.

We had a simply gorgeous day to take photos, and a gorgeous family, and a gorgeous setting. So, the photos turned out wonderfully. Here’s a peek into our day!

Northwest Indiana Christmas tree farm photo session

Okay, so it may be weird…but this is one of my favorites from their session. I just really love when the kids get a chance to act a bit silly, and not just sit and smile for the camera. How cute are these guys?

These two boys could not possibly be any more adorable, and they both had just as much personality as they had good looks!

Brothers photography northwest indiana

The cuteness is self explanatory. Also, Mom did a GREAT job with the wardrobe. I love it.

When you don’t have to beg brothers to kiss each other–that’s a good day!

This is my favorite image of the boys from the entire session. I just think it is so cute, and–in my opinion–there is NOTHING cuter than brothers having fun together.

The natural light in this session was AMAZING, can you tell? Michael did such a great job the entire day! He was even requesting more pictures at the end of his session!

Northwest Indiana Holiday Sessions | Logue Family

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to capture sweet Adeline. I’m not kidding, she is so sweet and beautiful. Mommy and Daddy better watch out for her later in life. She has the best disposition, and we were lucky enough to capture some great Christmas and holiday moments.

Candice even text messaged me when her images were delivered and said “YOu captured moments that mean so much to us!” Which made me happier than I can even explain.

It’s not even fair how cute she is. And don’t you completely believe that she was “Good all year”? Because I do. I’m just saying. Also, she was dancing to Robin Thicke here, which makes her even cooler!

Her Mommy and Daddy even let her open a gift during her session. Which made Adie very excited…obviously!

We were able to sneak in a few family pictures during their session, and this one was of my favorites. They are so cute.

Adeline thinks I’m hilarious. We totally bond during our sessions together, and it might be because I’m wrapped around her finger too! So cute.

Gah! The chubby legs are so cute I can’t take it.

This might be my favorite image from the entire session. Adeline put her head down on Mama’s shoulder without any coaxing, and Daddy couldn’t help but kiss her. Those are the best moments, the ones that happen naturally.

This is the first frame that I shot when I got there, and it ended up being one of my favorites from the day.

I cannot even deal with the amount of cuteness in this picture. Truly. It’s ridiculously cute.

I love how she’s holding her Mommy’s hand. And that smile. Well, and just her.

All in all, a perfect session with a perfect little family. Thanks so much Candice and Austin (and Adeline–of course).

Northwest Indiana Natural Light Newborn Photography | Baby Abigail

Last week I had the distinct pleasure of photographing the beautiful newborn Abigail Brynn at her home in Northwest Indiana. She is absolutely stunning, as is her big sister Alexis. This little peanut (only 6 pounds!) refused to sleep for the first hour of her session, but once she fell asleep she was a little angel and did an amazing time! Big sister was a trooper and helped me take photos–she even got out her very own camera at one point–it was ADORABLE!

One of my absolute favorite newborn photographs EVER! I love how natural she looks, and how comfy!

Love this sweet little girl, and how natural she looks in this pose!

I may or may not have purchased this little headband for my own firstborn, who turned out to be a little boy. I have a serious love affair with the headband though, and it fit beautiful Abigail perfectly.

Beautiful big sister Alexis. We couldn’t leave without letting her take her picture on the “stage.” She’s a bit of a ham, and I think I know where she gets it from.

Thank you so much Mike and Katerina for trusting me to capture your beautiful new addition. I think you two may have quite a bit of trouble on your hands in…like 14 years or so because your girls are gorgeous.

Northwest Indiana Candid Family Photography | Samples Family

A few weeks ago, I traveled to one of our local Christmas tree farms with one of my favorite families. They might be one of my favorites because Betty and Mike are my sister and brother-in-law; but also because they are awesome and I love them. They also have Clark (my adorable nephew), who is LEGITIMATELY one of the most beautiful little boys I’ve ever seen. I mean, you will see his gorgeous eyes, and you may die from the cuteness. I’m just saying. Prepare yourself.

The light was perfect, the weather was incredible and this family is adorable. Check out some of the sneak peeks of my favorite images from their session!
